Learning to play the cello had been a dream of mine for over 30 years. Two years ago, I decided it was time to make that dream a reality. I rented a cello and found a teacher – Luis. The rental cello was ok. Luis is fantastic. He’s patient, kind, encouraging, knowledgeable (a bit of a nerd about all things cello and music, to be honest) and loves teaching. He’s good at recognizing and building on my strengths as a student, and at finding new and engaging ways to work on my weaknesses. He’s also always making suggestions to expand my understanding of, and appreciation for, the cello and music – like recordings to listen to, local concerts to attend, and books to read. Although I’d hesitate to really call myself a ‘cellist’ (yet), I’m already closer than I would have thought possible after just two years, thanks to Luis.
