About Kyla

I have been a teacher for a decade and find educating others enjoyable. I started out as a sub, then a permanent sub, then an academic coach, an academic tutor, and an arts educator. Most of my experience is with middle and high school but I can work with all levels. My main subjects are English, History, Theater / Film, ESL, and Creative Writing. I love to help students improve in school (or at their craft) and feel good about their academic (or creative) journey! I am also a published writer and a professional TV writer who has written and produced for the WWE.

About the lesson

I typically start every session with getting to know the student. Why you signed up for the class, what your interests are, and what you expect to get from your experience with me. From there, I set up a detailed lesson plan based on what your needs are.

For English or ESL students, I may give a short assessment to see your level of English proficiency. For reading students, I would give a short reading comprehension exam.

For creative writing students, I would use our first session to have you write a quick story using a writing prompt. For creative writing, I also think it's important to figure out if you want to write novels, plays, screenplays, etc because that would further dictate where our lessons will go.

From there, I would go over what I think the first month of our sessions would look like. Afterwards, you could tell me if there is anything missing from the lesson plan that you wish to prioritize (for example, if you have an upcoming audition, I would want to prioritize that or if you have a test in school or something). After we agree on your lesson plan, we would set up our next time to meet.

I believe that I am very good at assessing where students are and catering to both their needs and wants so that everyone can get the best experience from my lessons and grow at a rate that feels comfortable for them.

I teach at all levels as I have for quite a while and have experience with everyone from preschoolers to adults.
