About James

Qualified English Teacher | GCSE Specialist | 15 Years' Classroom Experience | SEN & Neurodiversity Experience

I'm a PGCE/QTS-qualified English teacher with 15 years' experience teaching 11–16 year-olds in secondary schools and a further 10 years' experience as a private tutor.

I specialise in KS3 and GCSE English Language and Literature and have helped students of widely differing abilities improve their grades, confidence and enjoyment of English. Many of my students have gone on to achieve excellent GCSE results, including grades 8 and 9.

Just as importantly, I have considerable experience supporting students who find English difficult or who have lost confidence in the subject. I work particularly well with students with ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, processing difficulties and anxiety.

My approach

No two students learn in exactly the same way, so I adapt my teaching to the individual rather than following a one-size-fits-all programme.

For GCSE students, we can work on exam technique, essay structure, analysing unseen texts, creative and transactional writing, understanding set texts, planning answers and learning how to turn good ideas into the kind of responses examiners reward.

I particularly enjoy helping students understand how to approach an exam question. We'll look at strong answers together, break down why they work and practise applying those techniques until the student can do it independently.

Confidence is often as important as knowledge. My lessons are calm, encouraging and informal, and I aim to create an environment where students feel comfortable getting things wrong, asking questions and developing their own ideas.

Parents have told me that their children have grown considerably in confidence through our lessons, and I've successfully supported students in the final months before GCSEs as well as working with others throughout Years 7–11.

A professional writer as well as a teacher:

Alongside teaching, I'm a published travel writer and have worked as a BBC journalist.

That professional writing experience gives me another perspective to bring to English tuition. Writing isn't simply something I've taught for exams; it's something I've used professionally. I enjoy helping young people discover how much difference precise vocabulary, good structure and confident expression can make.

My lessons are friendly, engaging and always tailored to the individual student. I believe that building a good rapport is the key to successful learning, so I aim to create a relaxed, supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and developing their confidence.

I work with students of all abilities, from those who need help securing a GCSE pass to those aiming for the highest grades. I also have extensive experience supporting students with additional learning needs, including ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, processing difficulties and anxiety. I adapt my teaching to suit each student's needs, pace and learning style.

For GCSE English Language and Literature, I focus on developing the skills that make a real difference to exam performance: understanding texts, analysing language, planning and structuring answers, and applying effective exam techniques. I use clear explanations, practical examples and guided practice to help students become more confident and independent in their work.

Above all, I want students to enjoy their lessons, recognise their own progress and feel positive about what they can achieve in English.
