About Justin

Award-Winning Teaching with a Personal Approach

As an award-winning educator, I bring more than 13 years of experience in elementary education, reading intervention, and math support to my tutoring lessons. I was honored to receive the 2020–2021 Governor’s Teacher of the Year award and the 2016 HTEA Presidential Award.

I hold a master’s degree in Special Education from Rutgers Graduate School of Education. My background also includes Reading Recovery certification and Orton-Gillingham training for grades K–3. These experiences help me approach learning with an understanding of the different ways children develop skills.

My tutoring lessons focus on each student’s strengths and areas of need. Through clear explanations, guided practice, and encouragement, I help students work toward greater independence in reading and math.

About the lesson

How I Run My Tutoring Lessons

As an elementary school teacher and reading and math interventionist, I know that every child brings different strengths and needs to a lesson. My goal is to help students build skills and feel more confident using them.

I begin by finding out what a student can already do and where they need support. This helps me plan focused lessons with a clear, manageable goal.

During a lesson, I explain and model the skill, then give the student opportunities to practice with guidance. As they become more comfortable, I encourage them to try independently and explain their thinking. In reading, that might mean working on word recognition, fluency, or comprehension. In math, it might mean building number sense or working through a problem step by step.

I adjust the pace based on how the student responds. Sometimes we need more practice; other times, they are ready for a new challenge. Mistakes give us useful information about what to work on next.

Above all, I want students to feel supported. Tutoring is an opportunity to ask questions, celebrate progress, and develop confidence that carries into the classroom.
