About Alex
I’m a professional tenor and singing teacher based in Oxfordshire, with a background in classical singing, performance and behaviour analysis.
I have performed roles including Tamino, Rodolfo, Don José and Spoletta with companies including Oxford Opera, Cardiff Cotswold Opera and Gaudio Opera in France, alongside concert and oratorio work in the UK and abroad. My performing career is still developing, and I’m particularly excited to be making my world debut in a principal role with Oxford Contemporary Opera next year.
I have spent most of my vocal life studying with David Kirby-Ashmore, alongside the last three years working with Peter Bronder and ongoing technical coaching with Joy Mammen. My own development as a singer has involved working through significant technical challenges, including recovering from thoracic outlet syndrome and periods of burnout. These experiences have given me a particularly strong interest in sustainable vocal development, rehabilitation and understanding what individual singers actually need.
Before and alongside my singing career, I also have five years of experience in behaviour analysis. I find that this has shaped the way I teach considerably: I tend to see every student as a different puzzle. No two voices arrive at the door with exactly the same history, habits or challenges.
I’m very upfront with my students and prefer to work *with* you rather than simply instruct you. I’ll explain things when explanation is useful, but I’m equally conscious that too much analysis can sometimes get in the way of singing.
For me, learning to sing is a lifelong process. I particularly enjoy working with established singers who want to troubleshoot technical problems, refine their technique or rehabilitate a voice that isn't working as it should — but I also enjoy helping developing singers build a strong foundation from the beginning.

My lessons are centred on helping you understand your voice, develop reliable technique, and sing with greater freedom, confidence and expression.
With over 15 years of dedicated vocal study and training with leading UK pedagogues, I combine the principles of the bel canto tradition with modern, science-informed approaches to vocal training. Rather than simply giving you exercises to repeat, I aim to help you understand what your voice is doing and why — giving you practical tools that you can take into your own singing.
Particular areas of focus include vocal strengthening, passaggio management, technical troubleshooting, healthy vocal function, breath control, and the long-term development of the classical voice. Lessons can be tailored to your individual goals, whether you are working on a specific technical difficulty, preparing repertoire, or looking to develop your voice over the longer term.
I work with singers preparing for conservatoire auditions, choral scholarships, examinations, performances and professional engagements, as well as dedicated amateur singers who simply want to understand their voice better and become more confident, capable singers.
Whether you are just beginning or already have years of singing experience, lessons are adapted to where you are now and where you want your voice to go.
