About Elmar

Looking for an advantage to get into your university of choice or competitive fields of study such as medicine or engineering? Are you tired of struggling with putting together puzzles that seem to be missing pieces? Are you looking to push even further and chase excellence? I am an experienced guide that will help build YOUR map to success!

I currently have the privilege of pursuing an MSc Genetics degree, focused on molecular ecology, at the University of Pretoria, following completion of my BSc(Hons) Genetics degree in 2023. I have the better part of a decade's experience tutoring high school mathematics (both core and A-level) and physical sciences, spanning as far back as 2018.

As a science academic in the making, I am a deeply curious person who views learning as a two-way street, and I do not believe in a "standard" approach to teaching. Many years of teaching various subjects at all levels have shown me that learning is a personal experience that often requires unique attention and planning. My focus is on developing intuition, critical thinking, and importantly, confidence!

About the lesson

My teaching style focuses on constructive learning - presenting key pieces to the pupil and allowing them to discover how they fit together. With a strong emphasis on fundamentals and problem-solving strategy, I strive to help build an intuition that provides the pupil with the ability to contextualize questions and visualize answers.

I enjoy making use of colorful metaphors, visual aids and demonstrations, and just a touch of humor to make the content easy to understand, the connections between principles intuitive, and the lessons memorable.

Perfect! We’ve had an exceptional experience with Elmar these past few months. With a Grade 10 learner in boarding school, it’s not always easy to stay closely connected to his academic progress, but the detailed and thoughtful Maths and Physics feedback we’ve received from Elmar has made a huge difference. The regular reports are not only thorough but genuinely helpful in understanding where he is thriving and where he needs support.
What truly sets Elmar apart is his ability to understand my son as an individual. My son struggles with ADHD and dyslexia, and rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, he adapts his teaching style to suit how my son’s brain works. This has made a remarkable impact on both his confidence and his engagement with Maths and Physics.
He has been a breath of fresh air for our family — patient, insightful, and deeply committed. Most importantly, he has brought us a great sense of peace knowing our son is being supported in a way that truly works for him. I would highly recommend him to any parent looking for a tutor who goes above and beyond.

I was referred to Elmar by one of my lecturers when I was struggling with a particular module. Throughout our sessions he was always well prepared and organized, making good use of the time available. He is patient and willing to explain concepts in different ways, even repeating explanations when necessary until they make sense. His approachable nature and clear explanations created a comfortable learning environment and I appreciate the effort he put into helping me understand the material. I would recommend Elmar to students who are looking for a knowledgeable and supportive tutor.
