About Abanoub

In my role as an Associate Lecturer at the University of Anglia Ruskin Cambridge, I find great satisfaction in teaching a Master's course in architecture. It's an exhilarating journey of unravelling new concepts and inspiring students to exceed their own expectations. My teaching style is compelling, and I specialise in bringing out the best in my students. My expertise extends beyond the classroom, as I also engage in my second job, which involves contributing to the development of London's 8th tallest building. This hands-on experience enriches my teaching by incorporating real-world insights, particularly enhancing urban, technical, and design skills. Additionally, I have had the privilege of teaching at the University of Westminster for a duration of two years. During this time, I assisted students in crafting compelling concepts and achieving unique and impressive designs. I also instructed them on the effective use of software tools to realise their creative visions. Furthermore, my tenure at Ravensbourne University involved running one-on-one tutorials, where I provided valuable guidance to students dealing with various design and digital challenges. My professional journey has encompassed diverse experiences, including positions at renowned firms like TateHindle and HKS Architects. These roles have afforded me extensive exposure to the architectural and design industry, further enriching my ability to mentor and inspire future architects and designers.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My ambition to become a tutor in architecture was born out of my own struggles in the field. As a student in architecture, I faced the challenges of demanding coursework, complex concepts, and tight deadlines, much like many of my peers. There were times when I felt overwhelmed and unsure of how to excel in this rigorous discipline.

However, during my own academic journey, I discovered a valuable lesson - the importance of working smart, not just hard. I found efficient ways to tackle the workload, optimize my study habits, and approach architectural projects with a strategic mindset. These insights allowed me to not only succeed but also consistently stay on top of my game in the world of architecture.

Realizing the transformation these strategies brought to my academic and professional life, I felt compelled to share them with others. I wanted to help fellow students who were experiencing the same challenges I once faced. This desire to guide and mentor others in their architectural pursuits led me to become a tutor.

My personal experience of overcoming obstacles and achieving success by working smart became the foundation of my teaching philosophy. I wanted to impart not only the technical knowledge of architecture but also the invaluable skills and strategies that could empower students to excel and confidently navigate the demands of this field. In this way, my ambition to tutor emerged from a genuine desire to make the architectural journey smoother and more rewarding for others, just as I had experienced myself.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Teaching architecture is a wonderful experience for me. I love showing my students that it's not just about drawing; it's about telling a story and creating a narrative through their designs.

What's even more exciting is demonstrating how these creative ideas can become real using software like Rhino, Autodesk, Google SketchUp, and the Adobe Suite. These tools empower students to turn their visions into tangible projects.

In essence, my aim is to inspire my students to become architects who don't just design aesthetically pleasing buildings but also meaningful spaces that touch people's lives. I encourage their creativity, enhance their technical skills, and instill a passion for architecture that will stay with them throughout their careers.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My role models are not confined to my professional life; they encompass my family and friends. Their unwavering support and unwavering belief in my abilities have been the bedrock of my success. There is truly no greater wellspring of encouragement and motivation than the people who are closest to you.

It was their relentless determination to see me prosper that instilled in me a robust work ethic. This work ethic has been instrumental in propelling me to achieve remarkable milestones in my career, all before reaching the age of 30. Currently, I play a substantial role in the design of London's 8th tallest building, a testament to the values and principles I've embraced, thanks to the inspiration and guidance of my loved ones.

Moreover, my inspiration extends to the natural world. I draw from the intricate designs found in biology, taking inspiration from the elegance of plants and embracing the biomimicry approach to architecture. Architects like Buckminster Fuller have also played a pivotal role in shaping my creative vision. Their innovative thinking and groundbreaking designs have inspired me to push the boundaries of traditional architecture, resulting in the creation of astonishing and sustainable designs that harmonize with the environment.

In essence, my journey is a blend of human support, personal determination, and a deep connection to the beauty and wisdom of nature. Together, these influences have driven me to craft remarkable designs that not only stand as testaments to my passion but also contribute positively to the architectural landscape.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Tutors play a crucial role in shaping the educational journeys of their students. However, it's essential for tutors to recognize that life can be full of unforeseen stresses and complications for every individual. Each student arrives with a unique narrative, personal challenges, and life circumstances that might not always be apparent.

Empathy and understanding are key qualities that tutors should possess. You never truly know what's happening in a student's life outside of the classroom. They could be dealing with personal struggles, family issues, health concerns, or other pressures that may affect their academic performance. A compassionate tutor acknowledges these hidden struggles and creates a supportive and inclusive learning environment where students feel safe to share their concerns and seek assistance when needed.

By acknowledging and accommodating the diverse challenges that students face, tutors can not only facilitate better learning experiences but also inspire confidence and resilience in their students. It's a profound reminder that education goes beyond textbooks and lectures; it's about nurturing the well-being and potential of every individual.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Tutors serve as guides on the educational journey, but it's imperative for them to recognize the multifaceted nature of life, replete with its inherent stresses and complications. Every student carries a unique narrative, a life story that often remains veiled. As educators, we must appreciate that we can't always discern the trials and tribulations occurring in a student's life beyond the classroom.

Empathy is a fundamental quality that should be embedded in a tutor's approach. It entails not just recognizing these concealed challenges but also understanding a student's limits. It means being attuned to the emotional and mental well-being of students, realizing when they may need additional support or guidance.

An empathetic tutor not only acknowledges these complexities but also strives to bring out the best in each student. By fostering an environment of trust and understanding, tutors can help students overcome obstacles, realize their potential, and achieve their academic goals. This holistic approach to education goes beyond textbooks and exams; it's about nurturing the whole individual and empowering them to thrive despite life's complexities.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

My journey through university was a testament to the transformative power of determination and hard work. I vividly recall failing my first-ever essay, a humbling experience that could have discouraged me. However, I chose to persevere, learn from my mistakes, and grow.

That resilience paid off. In the end, I not only redeemed that initial setback but achieved remarkable success. I received three prestigious awards for my academic endeavors: one for my dissertation, another for my final design project, and a technical award recognizing my outstanding technical project. Moreover, I earned the distinction of two first-class honor degrees, a culmination of years of dedication.

My story serves as a reminder that it's never too late to turn things around, learn, and excel. It underscores the value of tenacity and the potential for tremendous growth, even in the face of early setbacks. This experience has been a cornerstone of my belief in the potential for continuous improvement and the importance of unwavering determination.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

It's truly remarkable to have a diverse range of passions that paint a vibrant picture of your life. One of these passions lies in the realm of sports, where I achieved a remarkable feat by playing badminton at a national level.
My love for traveling is another remarkable facet of my life. Exploring 13 different countries in a single year is no small feature. It's an adventure that exposes you to diverse cultures, landscapes, and perspectives, broadening your horizons with each journey. These experiences undoubtedly enrich my life and provide a wealth of stories and memories to cherish.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

In my four-year journey as a Superprof tutor, I've had the pleasure of witnessing many students thrive under my guidance. I'm deeply invested in their success and even attend their end-of-year shows to show my support.

My approach is marked by flexibility and an open-minded outlook. I firmly believe that each student has a unique path to success. No matter the situation, I see myself as that helping hand, ready to offer guidance and support. My ultimate mission is to empower my students to conquer challenges, reach their objectives, and unlock their full potential.
