About Emma
I am a fully qualified French teacher, and have just completed a PGCE at University College London Institute of Education, for which I was awarded a British Council Languages scholarship. I have been offering private tuition in French and English for the past 7 years. After graduating with a First-Class BA in English Literature and French from Queen Mary, University of London, I was awarded a scholarship to pursue an MA in English Literature, for which I achieved a Distinction. Having grown up in Canada, France, and England, I am a native English speaker and became fluent in French at the age of 12 after spending 18 months attending a local collège in La Ciotat, France. Throughout my BA I consolidated my language skills, particularly during my year abroad studying at l'Université Paris-Sorbonne. I was also awarded a Distinction in spoken French for my final year oral examination. To keep abreast of French current affairs and maintain my language level, I regularly listen to 'France Culture', attend film screenings at the Ciné Lumière and visit my French family and friends.

As an excellent communicator with a firm commitment to equal access, I welcome the opportunity to assist students of all abilities. I thoroughly enjoy working with students, and getting to know their interests and ambitions to help build their confidence and develop their language skills. In all my classes I strive to establish a supportive learning environment. I ensure that I sustain an optimal level of target language and include authentic resources as much as possible to make sure culture remains central. To stretch high-attaining students, I consistently offer extension activities, use targeted questioning and ‘diamond 9’ activities to develop students' higher-order thinking skills. I build in frequent opportunities for low-stakes assessment to offer students meaningful feedback on their progress. I also include opportunities for more creative engagement with languages, such as when I planned a Year 9 lesson for students to submit entries to the Oxford 2020 French Flash Fiction competition. As an avid reader of French literature with excellent subject knowledge, I can teach French up to undergraduate level. I am very familiar with both AQA and Edexcel syllabuses for GCSE and A Level. I also have experience of preparing students for the DELF exam.
