About Benjamin
When I'm learning a new mathematical concept, I'm not satisfied until I feel like I understand exactly how it was discovered in the first place. If I can't wrap my head around where some idea or logical leap originally came from, I keep digging until I do. I want to feel like I could have invented/discovered that piece of math on my own. When I teach, I want my students to feel like they're uncovering or even inventing the formulas they're being asked to apply. Once you embrace this approach, the work goes by so much faster and easier.

Frankly, I think so many people struggle with math simply because it's frequently taught wrong. Too often, math is presented as a list of formulas and rules that just materialized from nowhere, as if they were handed down from on high. I believe when you focus on the intuition and motivation behind mathematical concepts, they become much easier to understand. I always like to ask, "the person who invented/discovered this theorem... how did they come up with it?" because they stumbled across it logically; they didn't just copy it down from a chalkboard. Using an intuitive approach, we can start at "this material is so overwhelming. I don't even know where to start" and very quickly get to "that's really all it's saying? Duh."
